Thackeray movie review: Critics unanimously hail Nawazuddin Siddiqui's performance as Balasaheb Thackeray

Writer and producer Sanjay Raut doesn t distort facts from Bal Thackeray s story. The riled up speeches, the unapologetic candour and the larger-than-life persona are presented without a veil. While the honesty is commendable, it comes across that the lead character s political motivations lack clarity. Perhaps a more seasoned writer could have fleshed out Thackeray s character and eccentricities a lot better. But its Nawaz s nonchalant performance that overshadows the flaws and leaves a lasting impact.

Subtlety, or, for that matter, reason, are hard to be expected from Thackeray, a 139-minute propaganda video for the Shiv Sena as it gears up for the Lok Sabha election later this year. The project has been produced by Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Sanjay Raut and is an audio-visual extension of Sena s official newspaper Saamna, of which Raut is executive editor.

Given the kind of biopics Bollywood produces, it wasn't audacious to expect a botched up, idol worshipping, the contorted storyline with the sole aim of energising the party cadres ahead of the all-important general elections of 2019, but Thackeray surprise from the word go. It takes the popular hardliner image of Bal Thackeray and amplifies its effect by not holding back anything. There is absolutely no qualm in propagating ideas that can be divisive and can instigate violence. The makers are not hesitant in presenting Thackeray as somebody who used violence or at least was in favour of using it, as a means to instil peace. Interestingly, such a tactic takes Thackeray closer to authenticity. There isn t any desire to please political opponents.
